CHESTER YATES

Chester Yates, age 85, passed away at home on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. He was born January 1, 1938 to the late Whitten and Della Yates. He was born in Dickenson County. He was a retired repair man for B&L Furniture for 37 years. He was a member and Deacon of Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with family, watching baseball, and going to church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Troy; a sister, Linda Compton, and a brother in-law, Ray Gibson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Lucy Yates; a daughter, Denise (Avery) Hackney of Haysi; two sons, Michael (Kelly) Yates of Grundy and Mark (Diane) Yates of Haysi; grandchildren, Ashley (John) Keen, Adam (Amber) Yates, Tonya Gilbert, Katelin (Tyler) Osborne, Kirsty (Jeramy) Yates, Sara (Matthew) Lester, and Wendy (Marshall) Duncan; great-grandchildren, Lily Yates, Luke Keen, Rylee Keen, Kiptyn Gilbert, Madix Gilbert, Elizabeth Yates, Isaac Yates, Natalie Duncan, and Bennett Duncan; sisters, Janice Gibson, Loretta (Lowell) Adkins, Dorthua (Toy) Looney, Danny (Joan) Yates, and Peggy (Randall) Deel, and a brother-in-law, Homer Compton.

A Funeral service was conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders, Andy Deel, Roger Coleman, Mark Justice, and Denny Deel officiating. Burial followed in the Compton Cemetery, Haysi. Pallbearers were John Keen, Adam Yates, Tyler Osborne, Jeramy Gibson, Matt Lester, and Marshall Duncan. Honorary pallbearers were Luke Keen, Kiptyn Gilbert, Madix Gilbert, Isaac Yates, and Bennett Duncan. The family received friends after 6 p.m. on Friday, November 24, 2023 at the church where an evening service was held at 7 p.m. with Elders Lloyd “Popeye” Brown, Jerry Damron, Jimmy Dale Sanders, and Steve Coleman officiating.
