MICHAEL SHERRILL EDWARDS

April 24, 2024

Michael Sherrill Edwards, 74, of Clintwood, was born June 22, 1949 in Royal Oak, Mi. and passed away April 19, 2024 in Richlands.

Mike grew up in the Davis Ridge Community in Dickenson County, graduating from Grundy High School before obtaining his degree at Pikeville College. He spent more than 40 years with the Dickenson County Department of Social Services.

Throughout his life, Mike enjoyed a range of outdoor and social activities from tennis to gardening to building and flying model airplanes. He had a notorious sweet tooth, which he passed along to his daughters and granddaughter, with a special fondness for Reese’s Cups with ice-cold milk in a mug straight from the freezer. He was responsible for the creation of many batches of brownies and chocolate fudge over the years that were enjoyed by family and friends alike.

In recent years, he enjoyed watching his darling granddaughter turn into a delightful, funny, and smart-as-her-mama young lady who charms everyone who meets her (author’s note: her Auntie is the author). He also spent many afternoons immersed in the trials and tribulations of beekeeping with his brother and was part of the Lonesome Pine Beekepeers Association (LPBA) and Mountain Beekeepers. He was a member of the Clintwood Baptist Church family. He also belonged to the local Lions Club.

Mike is preceded in death by his mother, Delores Gibson Edwards; grandparents, Minnie Hess Gibson and Grover Cleveland Gibson, and half-sister, Judy.

Mike is survived by wife of almost 47 years, Gwen Selfe Edwards; daughters, Ashleigh and Katie (Dave); granddaughter, Olive; brother, Danny (Sally); half-sisters, Rhonda and Lecia, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Endless thanks are extended to the staff of Commonwealth Senior Living in Cedar Bluff, for care and the distribution of chocolate chip cookies these past months.

Visitation started at 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. and Celebration of Life was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 at Mullins Funeral Home with Deacon Robert Swindall officiating. Mike was laid to rest at Gibson Family Cemetery, Paynes Layne off of Lake Road Clintwood.
