MARY ELIZABETH COUNTS (MULLINS)

Mary Elizabeth Counts (Mullins), age 94 of Foxtown passed away, Friday May, 31, 2024. Born December 2, 1929 she was a daughter of the late Elder Manis and Mahala (Slone) Mullins. She graduated from Haysi High School in 1951, married the love of her life, Lige Counts and moved to Chicago the same year. Mary held several jobs while in Chicago, the last one was for Nabisco where she worked for 30 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1985.  She was a member of Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church and the DAV Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lige; one son, Michael W. Counts; granddaughter, Amanda Counts; grandson, Nick Green and four brothers, Glenis Mullins, J.B. Mullins, Johnny Mullins and a baby brother, Tivis Newland Mullins.

Survivors include son, Patrick G. (Susan) Counts; daughter, Rhonda (John) Simek; grandchildren, Evan (Kenny) Counts, Brittney Counts, Colin Counts, Elizabeth Simek, Sami (Nick) Watchel, Lance (Karen) Youngs, Marty (Kelsey) Green; a very special young friend whom she considered a grandson, Landon Rose, who called her Ms. Oreo; great-grandchildren, Ben, Sara and Luke; two sisters, Betty Anderson and Beulah (Henry) Ramsey; brother-in-law, Clarence “Top” Counts, many nieces and nephews and special friends, Ish and Nicky.

Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church with Danny Sluss and Darrell Milgrim officiating. Burial will follow in the Mullins Cemetery, Haysi. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at the church prior to a song service at 7 p.m.
