JAMES ARVEL STANLEY
James Arvel Stanley, age 86 of Backbone Ridge passed away Monday, August 13, 2024. Born in Dickenson County he was a son of the late Clement and Martha Mullins Stanley. He was a member of Bartlick Freewill Baptist Church and last employed as a mechanic in the coal mines. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with family and friends and sitting on the porch with his cats. His joy and happiness came from his church family and friends in Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Clement Keith Stanley; brothers, Sidney Stanley and Kennith Stanley; sisters, Irene Anderson, Lorene Stanley, Dessel Musick, infant sister Rita Stanley, and ex-wife, Tressie Mullins.
Survivors include his spouse of 32 years Nellie Gay; three daughters, Rita Stanley (Dennis), Rose Hill, Margaret (Robert) Coffey, Lenoir, NC, Rose (Clarence) Anderson, Clinchco; two sons, James Stanley (Betty), Clinchco and Arvel Heath Stanley, Clinchco; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Fay (Gary) Ratliff, Haysi, and three step-sons, Ron Yates, Jim Yates, and Marty Yates.
A Funeral Service was conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2024 at Bartlick Freewill Baptist Church with Junior Deel, Justin Deel and Johnny Anderson officiating. Burial followed in the Stanley Family Cemetery, Haysi. Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers. The family received friends after 6 p.m. on Thursday August 15, 2024 at Bartlick Freewill Baptist Church prior to an evening service at 7 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.haysifuneral.com.
