Sunny Jearld Barton, age 75, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2024, at his home. Born in Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Wilburn and Ema Jean Barton. He was a U. S. Veteran of the Vietnam War, a retired mine operator/owner, founding member of Haysi Veterans Memorial and avid fisherman and woodworker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Cochran Barton and a brother, Curtis Barton, Sr.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie (Greg) Wampler of Haysi; grandchildren, Jacob (Jensyn McCowan) Wampler and Emily Wampler; great-grandson, Emmett Wampler; canine companion, Duke; a brother, Keith (Charlene) Barton of Clintwood; sisters, Charlotte Mullins of Bristol and Debbie (Steve Mullins) Barton of Pound; sister in-law, Ann (Troy) O’Quinn of Haysi; best friend, Johnny Wayne (Carolyn) Turner, and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2024 at Haysi Funeral Home with Joe Glen Sluss officiating. Burial followed in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon. Pallbearers were Jacob Wampler, Greg Wampler, Johnny Turner, Donald McCowan, Larry Barton, Derek Ratliff, Steve Mullins, Danny Mondrage, Louie Garrett and Cole Artrip. Honorary pallbearers were Emmett Wampler, Stephen Turner, Jeffrey Turner, Eric McElroy, Adam Barton, Ervin Wampler, Scotty Wampler, Johnny Blair and Dave Mondrage. The family received friends after 10 prior to the service.
