MILDRED CHLOE KIRBY YATES
December 17, 2024
In Loving memory Mildred Chloe Kirby Yates was born February 19, 1939 and passed away on December 11, 2024, She was preceded in death by husband, Bobby Lee Yates; father, Samuel Brown Kirby; mother, Myrtle Moore Jones; infant son, Steven Lee Yates; and brother, Hoyt Stone.
She is survived by son, Michael (Jody) Yates; daughters, Trena Dye (Tommy), Halee Yates (Ethen); grandsons, Jacob Yates (Kim), Braxton Yates; great-grandchildren, Marcus, Audrey, and Bennett Yates; siblings, Jackie Ison, Carol Anderson, Steve York, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special caregivers: Patsy Mullins, Wynn Hull, Vicky Mooney, and Janet Hill.
Born in the small coal camp at Grimslyville the family moved to Clintwood shortly afterward where she lived the remainder of her 85 years. She attended Sunday School and Worship services at Clintwood Missionary Baptist Church and was saved and baptized there in 1951. She served there in many positions as long as she was physically able. She taught Sunday School and VBS, was active in many of the mission endeavors, especially the ladies mission circles.
She was married to Bob, December 8th, 1956. After graduating in 1957, she devoted the next few years to being a homemaker and mother. She made the decision to attend Clinch Valley College and graduated in 1971. She entered the teaching profession soon after and found it to be her calling. She retired after 30 years and took on the role of a loving grandmother and great-grandmother for the remainder of her life.
She enjoyed traveling. Her father’s family home in Ceres was special to her, as was “the Cabin” in Bath County where she enjoyed looking for yard sales and auctions to feed her growing glassware collection.
Faith, Family, and Friends is a commonly used phrase that we hear, but it truly describes her priorities in life. There is no doubt where her priorities were and where she will spend eternity.
A funeral service was held at 3 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2024 with a visitation at 2 p.m. with Dr. Bryant Owens officiating. Graveside services followed at the Phipps Memorial Cemetery, Clintwood. Pallbearers were Dr. William Robinson, Randall Johnson, Joe Brown, Jeff Newberry, John Johnson, Robert Swindall. Online condolences may be made at www.mullinsfuneralhome.net.
