EULA AGNES JOHNSON MCCOWAN

Eula Agnes Johnson McCowan of Nora, entered into her eternal rest on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at the age of 92. She is the oldest daughter of the late Ballard and Verdia Hood Johnson. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, John Jennings McCowan; her beloved son, Ronald Jennings McCowan; brothers, Ray (Sug) and Harold Johnson, and sisters, Retha Palmer and Ada Stanley.
She is survived by her loving and devoted children: sons, Allen McCowan, Wesley, and wife Reba McCowan, both of Nora; daughters, Anna McCowan of Pound, Sandra McCowan of Richmond, Cathy and husband Jimmy Pruitt of Columbia, SC, and Helen and husband Dan Collins of Sevierville, Tn.; daughter in-law, Flora McCowan of Yulee, Fl.; seven grandchildren, Shandra Gibson, Jonathan McCowan and fiancé Kristen Shores, Tara Gibson, Jill McCowan, Evan McCowan and wife Brenda, Jayme Pruitt and fiancé Corey Freeman, Logan McCowan and wife Brionna; nine great-grandchildren, Hannah Blair and fiancé Devin Bristol, SSGT Jacob Gibson, USAF and wife Christina, Skylar Sturgill, Emily Blair, Levi Chaffin, London Freeman, Lauren McCowan, Jackson McCowan and Luke McCowan; three great-great-grandchildren, Parker and Lowen Bristol and Wrenley Gibson; brother, Johnny Johnson and wife Madge of Sandy Ridge; several nieces, nephews, and cousins survive her as well. Survivors also include her loving church family at Fremont Freewill Baptist Church, where she was a member for many years; special friends, Goldie Ann Deel, Mary Smith, Sue Deloach, Dianne Griffin, Gracie Lassek Hart and Melissa Stanley.
A special thanks to her caregivers, Miranda Smith, Teresa Hay, Pat Slemp, Mary Ann Tabor and her supporting grand fur baby, Winter.
Mom was a Godly woman who wasn’t afraid of hard work. She once said, “I never had 'nothing' that got up and done itself.” Her many interests included gardening, quilting, crossword puzzles, basketball, the Atlanta Braves, watching Andy Griffith, reading, and studying the Bible and most importantly, caring for her family. In her younger years, she loved hunting and fishing with Dad. She touched lives and was loved by many; she will be greatly missed.
Funeral services for Mom were conducted Sunday, May 4th, 2025, in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel in Clintwood. Visitation began at 2 p.m., followed by a funeral service conducted by Pastor Eddie Edwards of Fremont Freewill Baptist Church. Burial followed at the John F. Rose Cemetery, Smith Ridge. Graveside service was conducted by her nephew, Greg Rose. Pallbearers were Wesley McCowan, Evan McCowan, Jonathan McCowan, Levi Chaffin, Corey Freeman, Timothy Johnson, Chris Rose, and James Layne.
Honorary pallbearers were Allen McCowan, Dan Collins, Jimmy Pruitt, Logan McCowan, SSGT Jacob Gibson, USAF, Denny, Dave and Daron Palmer, Larry Nichols, Mark McCowan, Ernest “Duke” Blair and Sidney Counts.
Mom requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105 or Fremont Freewill Baptist Church, P. O. Box 412, Nora, Virginia, 24272.
