NELLIE RHYNER EDWARDS

Nellie Rhyner Edwards went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 21, peacefully at her home. Nellie was born on September 19, 1939 to Charles Clay and Vertie Puckett Ford Powers in Dickenson County. She was a devout Christian, loving wife and mother to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a faithful member of Peuther Chapel Church for nearly 40 years. Nellie was the bookkeeper/office manager of Edwards Texaco, working behind the scenes, keeping everything in order for 25 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Iris Sutherland and Evelyn Ruth Pounders and two brothers-in-law, Lester Kiser and Johnny Sutherland.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Jackie Carroll Edwards; daughters, Melinda (Mark) Calliham, Jonesborough, Tn., Terrie (Wayne) Owens, Haysi, Brenda (Wesley) Elswick, Clinchco, and Caryn (Nathan) Edwards, Birchleaf; nine grandchildren, Scott (Michelle Patel) Arrington, Larry (Amanda) Arrington, Sarah (Dale) Francis, Chris (Melanie) Viers, Derek (Ashley) Viers, Ethan (Laura) Viers, Koen (Sarah) Elswick, Kaylee (Cody) Hutchinson, and Valerie Grace (Dylan) Lowery; fourteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janet Kiser, McClure and Yvonne (Kelly) Viers, Clinchco; brother in-law, Major Pounders; several nieces and nephews and special caregivers, Tyler, Shields, Angela Stanley and Evea Mullins.
A Funeral service was conducted, 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Haysi Funeral Home with Pastor Joe Glenn Sluss officiating. Burial followed in the Holly Ray Edwards Cemetery, Birchleaf. Sons-in-law and grandsons served as pallbearers.
The family received friends at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2025 prior to a service at 7 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.haysifuneral.com.
