Voreta Mullins, age 93, of Haysi, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was lovingly embraced in her final moments by her children—Patty, Bob, Linda, and Scott—as well as her cherished grandchildren. She was born on February 29, 1932, in Garrett, Ky., to the late Charlie Johnson and Gertrude Woody.
Voreta is survived by her four children: Patty Stanley, Bob Johnson, Linda Shortridge, and Scotty (Cretta) Mullins; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren—all of whom brought her immense joy.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Margret Ann; her brothers, Alfred Johnson and Adrian Johnson; and her sisters, Dora Puckett, Sadie Friedman, and Juanita Nickles.
Voreta will be remembered most for the deep love she had for her family and the kindness she extended to everyone she met. As a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she nurtured generations with patience, strength, and unwavering support. Her home was always a place of comfort, laughter, and warmth. Her smile could light up a room, and her compassion knew no bounds. Whether offering a listening ear, a comforting word, or a helping hand, Voreta touched countless lives with her gentle spirit and generous heart. She was not only the heart of her family but also a cherished friend whose presence brought peace and joy to all who knew her.
She was a member of Tarpon Freewill Baptist Church and also regularly attended Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now rejoicing in Heaven.
Services were held at Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church on Monday, June 16, with visitation from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 7 p.m. A graveside service took place on Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at Puckett Cemetery on Big Ridge. The procession departed the church at 1:30 p.m. Services were officiated by Danny Sluss and Leroy Yates. Family and friends served as pallbearers.
