It is with heavy hearts that your wife and daughters write this obituary in celebration of your life.
Roy R. Gilbert age 82 beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather of Haysi, sadly left this world July 12, 2025. He was born in Dickenson County on September 27, 1942. Not only was he proud of his beloved family he was proud to have served his country as an Army Sargeant. After leaving the military he worked hard to provide for his family as a coal truck driver for over 30 years. He was of the Old Regular Baptist faith. He always loved spending time with his family. He was loved and cherished by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by us all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Tilda Edwards Gilbert; three brothers, Purdy, Erbin and Turman Gilbert; four sisters, Leoma Cumbo, Edna June Fletcher, Dora Ann Baker and Frankie Perrigan; and two sons-in-law, Scotty Owens and Danny Boyd.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Vernelle Gilbert; five daughters, Debbie Owens and Sandy Boyd both of Haysi, Rhonda (AC) Rose, Clintwood, Missy Childress and Marsha (Ben) Barton both of Haysi; two sisters, Gearldean Mullins, Wise and Betty Viers Vansant; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at Haysi Funeral home with Elder Willie Cantrell officiating. Military rites and burial will follow in the Gilbert Family Cemetery, Haysi. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Zachary Owens, Kyle Owens, Cody Fletcher, Jacob Fletcher Dylan Childress and son-in-law Ben Barton. Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Sykes, Dean Mullins, Tracy Mullins, Barry Viers, Michael Perrigan, Gary Perrigan, Rocky Conaway, Scottie Conaway, Anthony Conaway, A.C. Rose, Wayne O’quinn and Ryan Clevinger.
The family received friends after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where an evening service was conducted at 7 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.haysifuneral.com.
