Three participants complete CNA program

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program offered through a partnership between Southwest Regional Adult Education, the Russell County Career and Technology Center (RCCTC), and Kissito Health Care Maple Grove began classes this year on April 12 and ran through June 24. This class met three evenings each week at the RCCTC, and participants also completed 40 hours of clinical training at Kissito Health Care Maple Grove in Lebanon. Instructors for the class were Rebecca Hall, RN and myself, Karen Gent. The clinical instructor at Maple Grove was Helena Smith, LPN.
I taught the Preparation for Employment portion of the class in which students reinforced their reading skills, developed digital literacy skills, prepared a complete resume packet, learned and practiced job interview skills, and participated in a mock job interview. Students earned a number of Northstar Digital Literacy certificates in curricula categories for Essential Computer Skills, Essential Software Skills, and Using Technology in Daily Life. Students also completed REVIVE! Training, which prepares them to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency with the administration of naloxone (NARCAN®). In addition to this, two participants earned a National Career Readiness Certificate. I am very proud of what these students were able to achieve in an eleven week program.
Rebecca Hall commented about the class, “The RCCTC Nurse Assistant Training Program meets the Virginia Board of Nursing’s (VBON) requirement for Nurse Assistant Training in Virginia. The expectation of excellence is high in this fast-paced and focused program. Through lecture, video, role-playing, and hands-on laboratory and clinical practice, students learn procedural skills such as bathing, dressing, positioning, and vital signs. Students also learn key communication techniques to provide compassionate care for people within the healthcare system. Our classroom/lab is equipped with hospital beds and all necessary medical equipment to practice skills. Each student received 40 hours of hands-on patient care experience in a clinical setting with the guidance of an experienced clinical instructor. Upon successfully completing the classroom and clinical requirements, students are eligible to sit for the Virginia Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) exam.”
Southwest Regional Adult Education congratulates the program participants and teaching staff on the completion of this CNA program! For information about future IET programs offered in the region, contact Southwest Regional Adult Education at 866-581-9935.
